Organic Farming Companies in India: Market Trends

As per the 2023 FIBL & IFOAM Year Book, 191 countries practiced organic farming in 2021 involving 76 million hectares of land, 3.7 million farmers, and 125 billion euros in product sales. Among all countries practicing organic farming, India tops the list of total organic producers and ranks sixth on agricultural land use under organic farming.

Agriculture and Processed Food Products Exports Development Authority (APEDA) tells us that 10.17 million hectares are under organic certification as of 2023. Madhya Pradesh has the maximum area under cultivation, followed by Maharashtra, Gujarat, Rajasthan, Odisha, Karnataka, Uttarakhand, Sikkim, Chhattisgarh, Uttar Pradesh, and Jharkhand.

The Economic Survey 2022-23 puts the number of organic farmers at 4.43 million and  10 million farmers are likely to adopt it over the next three years. The government of India has come up with an initiative, Farmer Producer Organizations (FPOs) under the Paramparagat Krishi Vikas Yojana (PKVY).

APEDA further states that in 2022-23, India produced 2.9 million metric tons of certified organic products, such as oilseeds, fibers, cereals, millets, pulses, aromatic plants, tea, coffee, fruits, spices, dry fruits, and vegetables.

In the same period, India exported 312,800.51 MT and raked in INR 5,525.18 Crore (708.33 million USD). Major export countries include the USA, European Union, Canada, Great Britain, Switzerland, Turkey, Australia, Ecuador, Korea Republic, Vietnam, and Japan.

What is Organic Farming?

Chemical farming uses synthetic pesticides, herbicides, fertilizers, and even genetically modified organisms (GMOs). Replace them with natural methods and practices, you get organic farming. Here, the focus is on sustainability, preserving biodiversity, keeping the soil and the organisms in it healthy, and producing nutritious, chemical-free food.

The certifications make an organic company organic. They vary from country to country, such as the National Programme for Organic Production (NPOP) in India and the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) Organic in the US. The company has to live up to these bodies’ stringent requirements to achieve the certification. Simply put, certifications assure the buyer of the authenticity of organic products.
